I am on a mission to help young people find a sense of pride and empowerment in their self-image. Shameless is a performance and a collaborative songwriting workshop that gives voice to hidden feelings of shame, jealousy, comparison, and the need for perfection that so many of us have, and teaches fundamentals of moving beyond them. Having struggled myself with some of these issues as a professional performer, I feel it’s important to be a role model for young people to help overcome shame stigmas and develop an empowered sense of identity. In this workshop, I will incorporate my original music, live electronic looping, videos, and candid stories about my own experiences as a kid, as an adult, and as a woman in the music industry. I will lead open discussions and a free-write with the students that will help them express and work out their own experiences on this issue. At the end of the workshop, I will guide the students in collectively creating a short, original song based on our discussion. I believe that the more our young people are empowered with hope and pride in who they are, the better off our world will be.
